How do I find matching herbs, spices, veggies or fruits?
Herbs and spices make your dish unique! For example, do you have a particular herb or spice on hand and want to know what it goes well with? Then select the ingredient you want to use from the corresponding category — for example, basil. Click on “Basil” in the list to go to a detail page with more information.
You can quickly see from the list how many relationships each element has. The number next to each element indicates the number of relationships with which that element is compatible.
On the herb's detail page (and every entry), you can view a description of its flavor, harvesting, and storage, etc., and see related herbs, spices, vegetables, and fruits sorted by selected flavor categories. To do this, use the filter with the up and down arrow icon. If you’re unsure whether the item is right for you or would like to learn more about it first, click on the corresponding entry to go to the detail page, where you can get an overview of the item or see what it harmonizes with.
This way, you’ll discover a wide variety of delicious combinations and can, for example, create your own spice and herb combinations. - Tailored to your personal taste!
Do you have a vegetable or fruit and want to see which herbs and/or spices go well with it? Then start your search for inspiration in the Vegetables or Fruits category.
When combined just right, these combinations create culinary masterpieces!
Can I filter or sort the list?
In each list, you can sort the entries by specific criteria. To do this, look for the three icons next to the magnifying glass in the upper right corner.
Using the icon with the up and down arrow, you can sort the list by name (default setting), Latin name, flavor, harvest start, and flowering start. The time settings are based on Western Europe.
The middle icon of the three, the heart, filters out all favorites. To select an item as a favorite, click on the respective item and select the heart there. If it is fully filled in, you have marked it as a favorite and can filter it in the list.
The left calendar icon filters out only the entries that are currently in season. Again, the times are based on Western Europe. The sorting is then alphabetical by name.
Keep in mind that harvest and flowering times may vary depending on where you live.
How can I write notes?
On each detail page, you can create notes by clicking the small round image in the middle. This will open a note sheet.
Creating a note: Click the pencil icon on the note sheet to start writing. Give your note a title (otherwise, a generic title like “Note for ...” will be created), write your notes, and save it using the tray-save icon at the top center of the sheet.
You can see whether a note has been created by the pencil icon above the title on the detail page.
If you want to view the list of all your notes, go to the list view and tap the rising sun icon in the top-left corner. Then select Notes. Here you’ll find your notes for all entries, sorted by herbs, spices, vegetables, and fruits. Alternatively, you can simply click the pencil icon on the detail page — which appears when you’ve created a note — to access the list of all notes.
How can I delete notes?
Delete the note's content without deleting the note itself: In edit mode, click the eraser icon to delete the title or note content.
Deleting a note: There are two ways to do this. If you’re in edit mode on the sheet, you can simply click the trash icon, and the note will be deleted after you confirm. You’ll know it’s been deleted when the pencil icon disappears from the details page and the note sheet closes. Alternatively, you can also delete it from the list by swiping left. The red trash icon appears to the right of the entry, and you can either swipe further to the left or click the trash to delete the note.
How the app came to be ...
It all started with a gift - a book about herbs and spices, in which all the herbs and spices were presented and some relationships to each other were listed. Exciting, exciting, ...
But how did you know which herbs and spices went TOGETHER? The short list of perhaps four or five suitable herbs and spices was supposed to be all that was needed to satisfy culinary curiosity? The search began! Countless cookbooks and baking books (specialized and general), cooking and recipe websites, blogs and exchanges with family, friends and neighbors followed.
However, it soon became clear when applying the tips that it was not possible to memorize all the recommendations for every herb or spice ... and the shopping list contained more vegetables and fruit than herbs and spices - we had to look at things the other way round: the first tables were created, but over time they became increasingly complex and almost went over our heads ...
But little by little, a database was created in which you could try out the culinary variety to your heart's content and create something new every time. Of course, an apricot is also delicious without herbs and spices, but seasoned with hyssop or basil, it gets a fine touch that sometimes blows your mind! Of course, tastes differ and the combinations suggested in this app should not be seen as dogmatic, but rather as a source of inspiration and an invitation to try out new things or reinterpret the 'old familiar'.
Have fun and bon appétit!
